In going through grad school, I have noticed quite a bit of subtle and even unconscious bias on the part of people writing homework assignments. There is a sometimes palpable aversion to alternative narratives…and by that, I don’t mean political. I mean something as banal as a snarky comment about herbs showing up in a homework assignment.

Whether or not I say something depends on the professor, the context, and whether I think speaking up will threaten my grade. Being older and more prone to speaking up, I can only imagine that young kids today are probably more inclined to stuff their concerns rather than say something.

I’ll share a recent example below, but I’ll need to paywall it due to it being homework.
