The Poseidon Adventure is a classic disaster film released in 1972. The movie is set on New Year’s Eve, when the luxury cruise ship SS Poseidon is overturned by a massive tidal wave. The story follows a group of survivors as they navigate through the upside-down vessel to reach safety.

Stars of the Original Film:

  • Gene Hackman as Reverend Frank Scott, a determined minister who leads the group.

  • Ernest Borgnine as Detective Mike Rogo, a tough and practical police officer.

  • Shelley Winters as Belle Rosen, a former swimming champion who uses her skills to help others.

  • Red Buttons as James Martin, a timid haberdasher.

  • Carol Lynley as Nonnie Parry, a singer on the ship.

  • Roddy McDowall as Acres, a steward on the ship.

  • Stella Stevens as Linda Rogo, Mike Rogo's wife.

Film Remake

The film was remade in 2005 as a television movie and again in 2006 titled "Poseidon." The 2006 version features a new cast and modern special effects.

Stars of the 2006 Remake:

  • Josh Lucas as Dylan Johns, a professional gambler.

  • Kurt Russell as Robert Ramsey, a former firefighter and mayor.

  • Richard Dreyfuss as Richard Nelson, an architect.

  • Emmy Rossum as Jennifer Ramsey, Robert's daughter.

  • Jacinda Barrett as Maggie James, a single mother.

So I have been a big fan of the original movie since I was a teenager. I enjoyed the film remake also. I had NO IDEA that there was also a two-part 2005 television remake until today when I researched this. I’m so excited to see that!

However, since the TV remake is another four hours, we’ll have to have another event to watch the TV version, which many say is the most realistic and perhaps best of the three. However, one of the reasons I like the original and the film remake is precisely because they are so ridiculous.

Tomorrow: Mummer’s Parade all day…I’ll start streaming around 11 am Eastern. Early afternoon is when the String Bands start playing. They are a must-see! You can join us at the same link.
