Covid Fear and the Nocebo Effect
Being overly afraid of an illness could actually make it worse. But find a middle ground.
Chris Waldburger published a great post today (Was Covid a 'Quantum' Event?) about the power of negative thoughts on our health. This is really important when it comes to COVID-19. As Chris points out, a large number of people actually think the chances of hospitalization with covid are ridiculously high at 50%.
Now hear this:
Anxiety and fear-related disorders are the second-leading co-morbidities associated with covid death, after obesity.
Fear and anxiety soaks your body with cortisol. For short periods, this gets your adrenaline pumping in order to respond to danger. Over long periods, this will suppress your immune system. (Lack of exercise only exacerbates the problem.)
In short, prolonged fear and the nocebo effect are proven ways to damage health. And this is what we have been living with for two years now.
Yes, yes, yes, yes and YES!
Our public health system is so woefully anti-holistic in its mindset, it is actively damaging in many ways.
I’ll share my comment to Christ below:
Beautifully written. I believe some of what you described is simply due to certain illnesses coming and going as environments change and people adjust or evolve to the world. But the nocebo effect is very powerful and can make illness worse or potentially manifest a chronic illness that might not hit someone else with the same genetics. Some of this is not “all in your head” but can be manifested by a damaged or overactive limbic system.
There is actually a huge effort going on right now in the world of chronic illness to promote limbic system retraining, which has been found to be hugely helpful for people dealing with things such as chronic Lyme and multiple chemical sensitivities. A chronic stress response is thought to be at play here - but it’s not to say that Lyme disease isn‘t real (or covid isn’t real).
I am personally working on this as I have chronic post-acute-infectious syndrome that definitely has resulted in real damage in my body (lab verified nerve damage and autonomic nervous system dysfunction) but I know years of accumulated stress and trauma have played a big part. One of my problems is that the illness itself is traumatizing, and if I have a flare up, like it did in September when I had to go to the ER for horrible vertigo1, it ends up retraumatizing me. Ideally I’d go live at a healing spa for a year and shut off from the world, and it’d probably make me feel a lot better, but I’m not rich enough to do that and have family obligations.
But yes, you are right - the fear of covid is definitely going to impact some people and make the disease worse than it might have been otherwise. The stress might also contribute to “long covid.”2 So pretty much everything our health officials have done has made the situation worse with their constant terrorizing of the people.
On the Opposite Side of the Spectrum…
All that said, I want to add quickly that we do have people who are so convinced that covid isn’t real that they didn’t take much in the way of precautions and then ended up dying.
By precautions, I don’t mean masking yourself up in 10 zillion layers or spritzing hand sanitizer on anything. I mean, making sure you eat right, exercise, and lose that extra poundage that puts you at extra risk of covid.
There’s nothing the media loves more than a story of some vocal “plandemic”3 naysayer croaking of covid. Yes, yes, I get it that remdesivir is probably responsible for a lot of “covid deaths,” but don’t make it easy on them. Get in shape and try to stay out of the hospital please.
In other words, we need to find a balance between abject fear and terror, which does not improve health outcomes, and outright denial.
Healing yourself via the power of positive thinking is possible, but if it were that easy, we wouldn’t have any sickness left on the planet.

I do think long covid is probably a real problem. See Dear Alex Berenson: Downplaying Long Covid and Chronic Illness Is Not Cool.
I’m of the mind that if there actually is a group of elites trying to “depopulate” the planet, they wouldn’t fake a virus but use a real one.
